Hen Cloud

The last rolling wave of gritstone that was thrust up from the floor of ancient seas and the first battlements of upland Britain, Hend Cloud beetles out over the valley of the Dane, looking towards Cheshire and its plains. The whole of the edge from Hen Cloud to the Hanging Stone makes a superb walk. Clud is a Celtic word meaning 'rock' and Hen could well be a corruption of 'Herme', the Celtic fertility god who has a clough and an outcrop of stones named after him on Bleaklow.
