Begin at the junction below St.James church, by descending the road past the Miner's Arms. Turn left at the bottom, opposite the Tudor House (1615). Turn right as signposted, to Carsington. The stiled path takes you easily over the fields.

Bear right, initially along the path, ascending gently. After the second stile turn left and ascend with the wall to your left, turning right at the top. Here, turn right, and keep the wall to your right.

After another stile, the path leads to the walled track. Cross this, as signposted, to Carsington. Ascend the next field, before bearing left to the field corner. Stay with the track on the left and continue to a wall on your right. Descend to the lane, and walk into the village of Carsington.

The village pub also bears the name Miner's Arms, and food is available at lunchtimes. This traditional country pub is a delightful place to take a break. At the road, turn left; ascend as signposted, between the houses. At the top, bear right (the top house has a commemorative plaque to private AR Pike, lost on the infamous Pilgrim Ridge, Flanders, in 1917). The slope to your right leads to the wood; go up this but do not cross the stile-instead, turn left and with the wall on your right continue alongside Carsington Pastures (look out for the windmill, in the field to your right).

Cross the Wirksworth road to attain the disused trackbed of the cromford and High Peak Railway, now the High Peak Trail. Turn left and continue along the trail - popular with cyclists (and dogs), so stay alert. Walk along the old railway bed to Harboro Rocks, on your right.

Leave the trail before reaching the works, as signposted to Brassington (the track on your left). Follow this track to the road, turn right, and after five minutes or so of walking you will see a stile on your left, again signposted 'Brassington'. With the wall on your left as you continue ahead, then right, descend to a lane. Turn right and follow the lane back to Brassington. Turn left at the road, then right, to reach the church and your starting point.
