Walk to the far end of Minninglow car park from the entrance and look for the first signpost 'Roystone Grange Trail'. Follow the signposts and walk along the disused railway trackbed of the High Peak Trail towards the stone embankment below Minninglow Hill - passing a quarry on your left and Minninglow Grange to your right. Below Minninglow Hill, which forms a distinctive skyline with its beech trees, can be found an old lime kiln of beehive design.

The ragged beeches of Minninglow Hill stand around the remains of several Neolithic tombs at a height of some 1,200 feet; many self-styles archaeologists have explored the site, from curious Romans on the road from Buxton to Little Chester, to the ubiquitous Victorian digger, Thomas Bateman. Savour the scene for a moment, and continue along the trail: beyond the 'beehive' kiln you reach a gate, which you cross to reach another gate, on the left. (Do not be seduced by the gate and track on your right). Cross the gate and the stile to join Gallowlow Lane.

Follow the lane, ascending two fields; at the third field follow the waymarks right to Trail Bridge, back on the High Peak Trail. From the bridge, descend across pasture to a stile near the bottom left-hand corner. Cross this and walk alongside the wall, crossing the fields and stiles to the farm track.

Your route goes right at the track, but a short detour, left along the track, is worthwhile. At the junction of the path and track go left to view the remains of the mediaeval farmstead. The Cistercians of Leicestershire farmed here during the Middle Ages, but they were not the first to develop the region. Visible evidence of Roman settlement can be found here: The boulders in the fields of Roystone Grange are the foundations of a sheep pen; traces of a Roman manor house and farm buildings also remain and a Romano-British 'fossil' field system can be seen on the hillside. Having viewed the old Grange, retrace your steps along the track to the path/track junction and continue ahead to the 'modern' Grange, where the long tradition of sheep farming continues. Go through the farmyard and ahead through the gates, passing Roystone Cottages to attain Minninglow Lane.![]()

On meeting the lane turn left and continue to Cobblersnook 'crossroads'; if desired, a quick and easy return may be made to the Minninglow car park by simply turning right here, along the metalled lane flanked by Cobblersnook Plantation.

Alternatively, continue ahead through the crossroads and pass the cottage ('The Nook'). Keep on this course up onto Upper Moor. Ignore a fork in the lane at the junction of two old packhorse lanes.

Turn right at the intersection and walk along Green Lane to attain the trackbed of the High Peak Trail. Follow the Trail right to Gotham and beyond to the Minninglow car park.
